The Brief
History books often erase the disruptors, the radicals, the misfits who dared to say no.
The Legends of Defiance is CGA’s bold effort to reclaim and reframe those stories in an artistic archive honoring African and diasporic figures who challenged oppression, resisted conformity, and dared to defy.
This project doesn’t just document history, it reimagines it through art, storytelling, and activism.
What We Did
Archival Research
We sourced and verified stories of rebels, feminists, thinkers, outlaws, and everyday legends who sparked movements or quietly resisted oppressive systems from colonial Kenya to the modern-day continent.
Visual Storytelling
We designed a striking illustrated series, merging hand-drawn and digital techniques to evoke each subject’s spirit. The visuals blend grit, beauty, and rebellion, bringing the defiant back to life.
Narrative Writing
Each figure is accompanied by a short-form narrative part biography, part poetic ode, part cultural critique; crafted to educate and inspire younger generations.
Multimedia Expansion (In Progress)
Short animated films, zines, and digital toolkits are currently in development to bring these legends into classrooms, exhibitions, and the digital public square.
In a world that rewards silence and compliance, The Legends of Defiance reminds us that rebellion is not chaos, it is clarity.
This project offers a radically African lens on resistance, courage, and legacy, ensuring these stories are passed on.
